Line Reading

do you have a moment

or two

to read some lines with me

I want to hear

what the poet meant

when he said

“Oh, how I crave thee”

and if it’s not asking

far too much

could we read

some more

I’d love to hear

“how I need thee”

and maybe a bit more

still night

in the still, quiet of night
they finally can breathe deep
darkness settles over them like a blanket
no moon to shine a light on troubles
he takes the questions from the edge of her lips away
she forgets to wonder or worry
they take comfort together
their world a small, dark space
they hold all they need between their locked arms
there may be battles brewing all around
but somehow they remain sheltered
chaos erupts in the day
over and over again
but their pure, impossible need
wipes all else from view
it’s so very quiet
so very still
if this night could last
but then they thought no more
and surrendered

always something there

why is it I think of you at inopportune times
not just when the chips are down
but on sunny days when I see your face in the clouds

the song on the radio is too obvious
I can turn that off
but there is no turning away from my cup of tea
and the color of your eyes therein

nor can I pretend not to see
that couple at the grocery picking out fruit
so I walk quickly outside
greeted by a warm gush of air like yours in the morning

karaoke at the party would have been your gig
reading in the library was ours
so there is truly nowhere
where you and I did not visit

a rainy day alone is the closest to peace I have
since solitude was foreign with you
and grey was not in your oeuvre

awake

what a shame
I had to awaken today
after the most exquisite dream
I could not tell where we were
just sensations, warm breezes
if I close my eyes now
I will not be at this desk
but rather in a sea of blankets
with you
and only the moon
to light our way

hunger

hungry for just a taste
knowing more would make me crumble
needing to nibble a bit from below
you can take it, give it
you have so much more
when I don’t have nearly enough
will we have this chance again
I’m thinking not
so rather than mourn
let’s celebrate
soar together
as high as we can go
so maybe a taste isn’t enough
I knew it wouldn’t be
I’m crumbling
on my knees
you make me hunger
