Take a Walk

My kids roll their eyes as I stop to take yet another picture. This time, it was a dew-drenched spider’s web. “Why do you take so many nature pictures?” they ask. “You must have a million shots of flowers and trees and stuff,” they say in their childhood- approved hyperbole. “You can never have too many pictures of trees,” I tell them. “Why?” they ask earnestly. Before I embark on a soliloquy of why I love the mighty structure of trees and the delicate strength of flowers, I pause, realizing my children may need a gentle reminder of what’s important and beautiful and valuable. Time to put away gadgets and take a walk.

Plugging Away

Escher_Relativity_1953
sitting nameless in the maze
waiting for someone to find me
plugging into the system
looking for connectivity

drones tapping away
flashes pass me by
is this my life now
figures grab my eye

maintain
status
retina
overload

my taste buds screaming for more
something real not imitation
flavors exploding on my tongue
do you need an invitation

there is no shutting down
just click restart
no escape except the button
I can draw you up a chart

touch
swipe
error
crash

Hurry Friday

Thursdays
such a tease
delights imagined
just steps away
just get through today
somehow Thursdays suck
all energy I’ve had
all hope for the week
drained
emotionally spent
making copies
freeing paper jams
typing reports
that are as meaningful
as ice to the devil
so hurry the hell up
Friday
so I can begin to really live
love, be happy
because this is purgatory
with heaven a breath away

Burning

Burning so damn much
it’s hard to write
What sweet words
can I give as a token
What I feel sure as hell isn’t affection
but a burning
so deep within
I try to claw it out
Only I succeed
not at easing the ache
but in yearning more for you
Should I beg
try to steal
a moment of your time
Relief’s not in my grasp
without you
Believe me
I tried
and was burned

Beyond Stars

shifting legs
keeping the tide at bay
holding breath
keeping the words hostage
fingertips
whispers
no need for grand gestures
when all the world
is contained
in one drop
when so much pleasure comes
it can’t be contained
but has to be shared
and the joy
of the joining
surpasses
everything
dark
shifting hands
keeping bodies close
holding fast
keeping gazes locked
climbing
piercing
opening a sliver in the sky
exposing flickers
something beyond
clouds or stars
when nothing could be sweeter
or as tangy on the tongue
than the drop of potion
and the joy of the joining
surpasses
everything
dark
