Wide Awake

Wide awake
it hurt too much to sleep
and when pain ebbed
the numbing was even worse
Just thinking of the right words
something, anything
to make it right again
was enough to make anyone crazy
Curling and tossing on the bed
such a hollow feeling
a glaring reminder of being alone
even if someone else was there
These hours locked away
in the dead quiet of night
stole sane thoughts
and left all bereft
Rest would not come
when so much was wrong
if there were ways of turning the tides
they may be vetted in the dark

With Eyes Closed

the possibilities are too amazing
too numerous
to mention here
exuberance
is granted
exhilaration
is understood
the promise of summer
with its shedding of layers
down to skin
the heat and wonder
familiar tale
old as the hills
still surprising
gripping
moving quickly
scenery rushing past
like cool water
hair pushed back
by the wind
anything could be coming
lying on the path
begging to be part
the journey
from still thought
to terrific turbulence
the ride of their lives
gloriously taken
with eyes closed

Dozing

20130802-072238.jpg

So very, very tired
My hands are shaking too much
There’s no handle for me to hold
My legs are about to buckle
I hope no one minds
I need a spot
in the middle of the floor
To hunker down
Curl up and rest my eyes
So nice and quiet
Underneath polite chatter
By all means
Proceed with your business
I just can’t remain upright
Sitting’s no good
The waves pour over me then
And when I’m sodden
I fall
All my joints are bent
No straight lines
I’m so tired I can’t see where my feet would take me
Please just let me lie here
Your voice, though faraway,
heralds the dose of reality I need
My eyes though shut allow flickers
light and sound seep in
This is nice
Maybe dreams will visit me here
If no one minds me dozing
in the middle of their neat little plans

Fascinated

The thinly veiled anger was quickly turning into a want unlike any other
He could taste her from across the room
Knew exactly how her favorite spot behind her ear would smell
Berries and leather

He tried to turn away but found he could not
Fascinated
He could only look on as she navigated the thirsty throngs
They seemed to sense her sweetness

He felt his foot take a step forward
On its own, with no direction from his head
At least not from the one he needed to use
This was not going to lead anywhere good

But she was getting closer in his sights
Which meant he was still moving
And he could now hear her throaty laugh
As it rippled right up his spine

He may have pushed someone out of the way
As he could not pretend to focus anywhere else
He was a predator
But she was already holding him captive

His heart bounced down to his stomach and back again
As she slowly turned and looked his way
With what kind of look?
He rummaged through his rolodex of her emotions

Was she hopeful and happy to see him
He tried to breathe and feel hope simultaneously
His anger at seeing her without him was dropping away
Like layers of clothes being shed at warp speed

He was completely led by something besides logic
Beyond hurt or history
Taking his final steps to meet her
She smiled and took his hand

Tucked Away

darkroom
I was kept carefully tucked away
He said it was like a fine wine to be savored
I felt it was more the embarrassing condition he had to hide

Waiting in the dark was not so terrible
When I knew the light washing over me would be glorious
It was enough to keep going

For awhile

Light and dark don’t like to keep apart for long
They spill into each other
Exposing all secrets

When people could see
All would be empty
Colorless

Fleeting

So each night was taken and drained
Every drop accounted for
And I was kept tucked away
