The Child Remains

I’ve often wished for beauty
I think I had it once upon a time
I found an old photo
Where my eyes shone
I was a child
Who only knew simple things
like love, fairies, and dreams
But then somewhere
along the way
that shine was taken
wrested from me
And with each blow of the fist
and each threat of the belt
every hateful, ugly word
came a little more of the world
with its fear, anger, confusion

I don’t think I can be
beautiful again
any shine I’ve tried to put back in my eyes
was chemically induced
and never lasted
But I can aim for dreams and fairies and love
in no particular order
because of that photo
where a child had hope
and thought she could be anything
before anyone could tell her otherwise
and I think somewhere inside
that child remains
and I love her

No Wrong Way to Write

Spill onto the page with ramblings your heart has led you to trip over
Grammar rules don’t apply here-
Screw punctuation!!
Only words that rip and tear you apart until you’re bloody and empty are welcome
Only when you stop beating yourself up can you let go and take up the pen instead
Only when despair is poured out can the soul be at rest
The empty vessel can again partake
The body revels in the base nature with which we’re all born
The defilement reaches an impasse
Until feeling overwhelms
And ideas form yet again
Unleashing rage, fear, lust on the page
With no one to blame or turn to
With no censure or false pretenses
With nothing but joy in expression
No relief except by your own hand
No gain or loss except existence
No wrong way to write.

The wonderful folks at Writers Haven have published a few more of my poems. Take a moment to check it out along with some of the other wonderful features on their site.

“We are proud to associate with the poet Word Rummager who has sent us the Immaculate Collection of poems. She has been a regular contributor of both poems and short stories. This month’s poems are astounding.”

At Least I Can Feel

Pollock_summertime
The scope is just too large
The blank canvas too vast
I just don’t know where to start
So I crack my knuckles
Turn my gaze forward
And instead of tuning out distractions
I let them guide me
To worlds previously unseen
Unimagined
Words flow from my fingertips
Words that barely make sense to me
Words evoking moods and visuals
That exist only in my head
Or maybe I ripped them off
From the plethora of sensations
Bombarding me at every turn
Someone once told me to be mindful
But they didn’t know or understand
For me that means everything
Boring down on me at once
And I can’t pry apart
The real from the surreal
When it all sounds and feels
So good and so bad
I’m not sure which is better
At least I can feel.
